Methodology

Naegele's rule with cycle-length adjustment (ACOG CO 700)

EDD = LMP + 280 days + (cycle length − 28)

Adds 40 weeks to the first day of the last period, adjusted for cycles longer or shorter than 28 days. Only about 4% of babies arrive on the due date; most are born between 38 and 42 weeks.

Who it is for
Pregnant women who know the first day of their last menstrual period.

Limitations

  • An ultrasound in the first trimester is the most accurate way to date a pregnancy; if it differs from the LMP date, your clinician will use the ultrasound date.
  • Less accurate with irregular cycles, recent hormonal contraception or breastfeeding.
