Methodology

Dose-to-rate conversion

mL/h = dose per hour (mg or units) ÷ concentration (mg or units per mL); mcg converted to mg (÷ 1000)

For mcg-based doses, the drug amount must be entered in mg.

Who it is for
Continuous infusions with a prescribed dose and a prepared concentration.

Worked example: how to calculate dose → mL/h

Inputs

Prescribed dose
0.1
Dose unit
mcg/kg/min
Weight
70 kg
Drug in the bag/syringe (mg, or units)
4
Total volume
50 mL

Result

Pump rate
5.25 mL/h
Concentration
0.08 per mL (mg or units)

Calculation:

0.1×70×60/1000 = 0.42 mg/h ÷ 0.08 mg/mL = 5.25 mL/h

An illustration with sample values, worked out with the same method the tool above uses.

Limitations

  • Arithmetic aid only: always follow the prescription, local protocol and smart-pump drug library, and have high-risk infusions independently double-checked.
