How to review a health tool

How the medical sign-off on health calculators and references works, and what happens before and after it.

What are the tools?

Tools are health calculators and references, such as a BMI calculator, a due-date calculator or normal-range tables. Each tool has a formula or method and a scientific reference shown on its page; some are for the public and some for professionals.

Before a tool reaches you

The team runs internal checks first: formula and reference verified, inputs and edge cases tested, Arabic and English terminology reviewed, accessibility checked. A tool reaches medical review only after passing these checks.

The medical review

  1. You get a notification and an email when a tool is ready for medical review.
  2. Open “Tool reviews” in the portal and choose the tool. You can preview it as visitors will see it.
  3. Try the tool with realistic and extreme values; check the result and how it is explained, the reference, and that warnings and advice to see a doctor are appropriate.
  4. Approve the tool, or request changes with an explanation of what must change.

After approval

After your approval, the team publishes the tool and you are notified when it goes live. Your name and the review date appear on the tool's page.

  • New version = new review: any change to the formula or method means a new version that needs a new medical review.
  • Periodic review: every published tool is reviewed at least every 12 months, and you are notified when a tool you reviewed is due.
