Methodology

Absolute count from differential

absolute = WBC × percentage ÷ 100

Absolute counts are more meaningful than percentages when the total white cell count is abnormal.

Who it is for
Adults and children with a differential white cell count.

How this calculator works

The inputs

  • Absolute counts come from the total white cell count and the differential; the ICSH 2014 guideline sets out how analysers that produce differential leucocyte counts should be evaluated before use.[1]

Worked example: how to calculate ALC / AEC

Inputs

White blood cell count
6 ×10⁹/L
Lymphocytes
30 %
Eosinophils (optional)
2 %

Result

Absolute lymphocyte count
1.8 ×10⁹/L
Absolute eosinophil count
0.12 ×10⁹/L

An illustration with sample values, worked out with the same method the tool above uses.

Limitations

  • Manual differentials have counting error at low cell numbers.
