Methodology

NLR (Zahorec 2001); PLR

NLR = neutrophils ÷ lymphocytes; PLR = platelets ÷ lymphocytes

Research markers of systemic inflammation. Cut-offs vary widely between studies and conditions, so none is applied.

How this calculator works

Where the formula comes from

  • Zahorec (2001) followed white cell counts in 90 oncology ICU patients and proposed the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio as a simple marker of stress and systemic inflammation; its prognostic value was to be tested in further studies.[1]

The inputs

  • In that study, more severe illness (SOFA and APACHE II) went with more marked neutrophilia and lymphocytopenia.[1]

Where accuracy falls (published evidence)

  • In 413 healthy working adults, normal NLR values ranged from 0.78 to 3.53 (mean 1.65).[2]

Absolute lymphocytes
2 ×10⁹/L
Platelets (optional)
250 ×10⁹/L

Limitations

  • Not diagnostic; affected by steroids, infection, chemotherapy and stress.
  • In healthy adults, normal values ranged from about 0.78 to 3.53 (Forget 2017).
