Methodology

Glycemic load (Foster-Powell et al., 2002)

GL = GI × available carbohydrate (g) ÷ 100

Glycemic load combines how quickly a food raises blood glucose (GI) with how much carbohydrate a portion contains.

Who it is for
Any food with a published glycemic index.

Worked example: how to calculate glycemic load

Inputs

Glycemic index (glucose = 100)
55
Carbohydrate in the portion
30 g available carbohydrate

Result

Glycemic load
16.5

Medium (11–19)

Calculation:

55 × 30 / 100 = 16.5

An illustration with sample values, worked out with the same method the tool above uses.

Limitations

  • GI values vary with ripeness, cooking and what the food is eaten with.
