Methodology

Energy-content rule (≈ 7700 kcal per kg of body weight)

weeks = (current − goal) ÷ (deficit × 7 ÷ 7700)

A simple rule that assumes each kilogram of body weight lost contains about 7700 kcal. Real weight loss slows over time as the body adapts, so this underestimates the time needed.

Who it is for
Adults aiming for gradual weight loss; not in pregnancy.

Worked example: how to calculate weight goal timeline

Inputs

Current weight
90 kg
Goal weight
80 kg
Daily calorie deficit
500 kcal/day

Result

Rough estimate
22 weeks
Average loss per week (simple rule)
0.45 kg (≈ 1 lb)

An illustration with sample values, worked out with the same method the tool above uses.

Limitations

  • Underestimates time: dynamic models (Hall 2011) show weight loss slows as weight falls.
  • Very low calorie intakes need medical supervision.
